2-BATH DEVELOPERS

Divided Developers are usually two baths used in succession without a rinse. After the second bath the film is put directly into an acid-hardening fixer.

It is a myth that no development takes place in the first bath. In most formulas Bath A contains all the developer ingredients. Bath A controls development of the highlights and starts developing the shadows. Bath B allows the shadow to develop to completion. This two-stage development results in a wide range of contrast control and makes it well suited for the Zone System.

The first bath keeps very well and has a capacity of 10 - 15 films per liter. The second bath is used and should be replaced every 5 - 10 rolls.
